Downtown Kansas City a neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri , is a central business district and one of the oldest neighborhoods in Kansas City. It is located just north of the Missouri River, south of Westport Road , west or Southwest Trafficway . As its name implies, Downtown KCMO sits on bluffs overlooking Brush Creek to the east and The Paseo to the west.
Downtown began as an early trading post along two major Indian trails crossing at what was later named Main Street by William Bent when he established his company stores there – first in 1826 with partner Charles Branscomb; then soon after that independently across from each other southwest corner Third & Main Streets). In 1831 David A. Harvey arrived here via those same trails and opened “The Lone Elm”, which purchased by Dr Thomas Say in 1833, then renamed it as “The Cherokee House”.
